Ben Kruger doing it for Rhinos

Ben Kruger’s  “So Good” Potjiekos Challenge supported by Crown National.

“One man, three charities, twelve hours and forty recipes” is the way in which Ben Kruger describes his new challenge. On 29 June he is going to attempt to make forty different recipes in just twelve hours without any help.

The challenge will happen at the Innibos Festival terrain and many of Ben’s friends form the music and entertainment industries are going to be there to provide moral support and encouragement.  Crown National the manufacturers on the “so Good” product series is the main sponsor of the event with additional support from Checkers and Distell.

All the food will be for sale and the money from  these sales will be given to three charities. These charities are:

Rhino Buddies is an organisation that creates awareness for the need to protect all wild-life.  More information on them can be found at:

The Helpnet fund started providing safe houses for abused women and children in 2003 and since then they have created a presence all over South Africa.

Die Watervalboven Ouetehuis is the last institution to benefit from the potjiekos challenge

On Saturday 29 June at 7h00, Ben will start with his challenge and he hopes to have completed 40 different recipes by 19h00 that evening. There will be ten beef pots, ten, mutton pots, ten pork pots and 5 each chicken and venison. Members of the public or companies my buy the pots to take home or to donate to a feeding scheme.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, prior to the challenge Ben will give demonstrations of the fine art of potjiekos making to all who are interested. The demonstrations will happen at 10h00 and again at 15h00. The venue for the demo’s as well is the challenge will be found right next to the Radio Laeveld broadcast caravan. Auctions will be held in aid of the three charities and there will also be a variety of prizes that can be won through a lucky draw.

Visitors can look forward to, among others, a sheep offal potjie, eisbein and sauerkraut,, rabbit, ostrich and pork belly pots.

Ben thought of the idea while travelling between  Pretoria and Ermelo in a car without a radio. Innibos showed an immediate interest as did a variety of sponsors

Ben says that he was surprised at the speed with which everything fell into place and all he has to do now is to get those pots cooked!  Ben hopes to get a spot ion the Guinness Book of World Records with this challenge and every pot will be tasted for quality by Chrizette Janse van Rensburg , a professional chef from Idube Game Lodge.

Ben Kruger is an actor, singer, writer and director as well as an experienced cook of venison and potjiekos dishes. He is currently appearing in “Binneland” on Kyknet.
