According to the park officials, the rhino carcass was found during routine patrol in Agaratoli range of the forest. The carcass was riddled with bullets and its horn was sawn off by the poachers.

The park was formally opened for visitors by the state forest minister Rockybul Hussain. The park authorities have deployed 17 elephants for taking tourists inside the park. A total of 120 tourists, including over 60 foreigners, visited the park on the opening day.

Later on in connection with the latest poaching incident, three poachers were apprehended by the forest staff with the help of local police. The poachers are believed to have been involved in the latest incident of rhino poaching, said a park official. From the possession of the poachers, the police recovered a .303 rifle and some cartridges.

Police claimed that the three arrested poachers, including one from Nagaland, confessed to their involvement in killing the rhino. The Police is further investigating the matter to recover the horn.

This is the 24th rhino killed inside the park this year. Although the Assam government chalked out several strategies to put an effective curb on poaching of the one-horned rhino inside the protected areas of Assam but this shameful activity continues unabated.
